Synterra Ltd. served as Construction Manager and successfully lead the Economic Opportunity Program in an effort to insure the participation by a mix of minority classifications as diverse as both Temple’s student body and the surrounding community. Located at the southeast corner of Broad Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue the new $216 million residential complex houses approximately 1,275 students. This facility will serve as a dramatic southern gateway to Temple’s Main Campus. Synterra, Ltd. brought forth community leaders, community organizations/representatives, and various trade unions to create strategies for increasing representation on the project site. These successful efforts included a joint effort to inform the community about the project opportunities, an increase in representation on the project site, meetings with individual contractors to help foster Mentor/Protégé’ relationships between larger and smaller contractors and businesses, outreach to residents within designated zip codes in the community that are skilled in relevant trades, compliance provisions for the subcontractor and low tier subcontractors, and meetings with trade union officials to insure their support of resources for hiring of local community residents. The success of this program has encouraged the University to apply these successful methods to future projects throughout the Temple University campus.
